CHAKRASANA (WHEEL)

Chakra = Wheel; Asana = Posture

From a supine position, knees are bent and placed on the floor a few inches from the buttocks, heels level with the fingertips. Hands are placed overhead, palms on the earth, shoulder width apart. Fingertips point back toward the shoulders and are spread wide for support. Torso is lifted as the crown of the head rests on the earth for support. Leg muscles are activated. Arms are straightened and head is lifted off the floor. Sternum is lifted creating one long arc of energy from the legs through the torso. Arms press upward creating space in the front and back of the body. Feet are pressed evenly into the floor and tops of the thighs are rolled slightly inward. The weight of the head is surrendered as the shoulders are drawn away from the ears.

Benefits of the posture:

  • strengthens the back, buttocks, legs and feet
  • aligns the arms as the shoulder joints are opened
  • strong massage for the kidneys and adrenal glands
